The story of Casa Olié

Staying at Casa Olié is discovering a boutique hotel in Oaxaca where every space holds a story of courage, hope and new beginnings.

Our essence stems from the legacy of the Olié family, whose story began during one of the most difficult periods of the 20th century: the Spanish Civil War. In the midst of the conflict, Don Miguel Escobar Olié, as a young boy, embarked with his parents and siblings on a long journey in search of a safe place to begin a new life.

Her father, a pilot for the Spanish Republic, managed to get his family on one of the last flights evacuating people fleeing the war. Her mother's family, surnamed Olié, were originally from Seville, and together they began a journey that would take them through various countries before they finally found a home.

Their first stop was Montauban, France, where they stayed for nearly two years. Later, they traveled to Casablanca, spending several days aboard the ship that would eventually take them to Mexico: the historic Nyassa, a vessel that transported hundreds of Spanish exiles seeking a new opportunity.

It was in Mexico where the family found a new beginning and where, years later, the legacy that inspires Casa Olié today, a boutique hotel located in the heart of the Historic Center of Oaxaca, would emerge.

Rooms that tell a story

Each of our rooms is named after a stage of this extraordinary journey. They are not simply names: they represent places, people, and moments that shaped a family's destiny and gave rise to our hotel's identity.

The Miguel Room pays homage to Miguel Escobar Olié, whose life and legacy continue to inspire this project. Following his passing in April 2020, his memory remains present in every corner of Casa Olié, reminding us that great journeys not only change destinations, but also build stories that transcend generations.

Today, as you explore our spaces, you will not only discover a boutique hotel in Oaxaca; you will become part of a story of resilience, hospitality and tradition that lives on in every detail of Casa Olié.
